A picture of wealth and honour, and of growing old together. Li Jumei, a summer month of the jiachen year (2024).

About the painting 赏析

Peonies lean in from the left, a few large red blossoms among others of pale pink, shaded in the boneless manner so that they are soft yet keep their form. On the right a slender woody stem climbs the scroll, its young leaves brushed in mixed ochre and green, and gives the composition air. Two bulbuls, known in Chinese as baitouweng, “white-headed old man”, share the picture: one at the very top with wings raised, the other perched among the branches, looking back, its black and white head drawn with a fine brush.

Because of its white crown the bulbul stands for growing old together; painted with the peony, flower of wealth and honour, it makes the familiar wish “wealth and white hair together”, for a long and loving marriage.
