富贵花开满园春Peonies in Bloom, Spring Fills the Garden

Peonies fill the scroll from top to bottom in tiers of colour: a few apricot-yellow blooms at the top, soft as morning cloud; clusters of pink in the middle; and below, heavy flowers of crimson and rouge, each petal shaded separately around thick golden stamens. Dark green leaves and slender stems of blue-green bamboo thread through the flowers, their cool tones making the reds glow. On a bank washed in pale mineral green at the left, a pair of mynas, glossy black, keep company: one turns back with its beak open in song, the other bends toward it.

The inscription at the lower right reads “Peonies of wealth in bloom, spring fills the garden”: the peony stands for wealth and honour, and a garden full of spring is a wish for a flourishing, happy household.

满幅牡丹，自上而下层叠铺陈：画顶杏黄数朵，色若朝霞，淡雅温润；中部粉红成簇，下部朱红、胭脂诸色压阵，花头硕大，瓣瓣分染，金黄花蕊点得饱满。其间穿插墨绿叶片与石青细竹，冷暖相映，愈显花色之艳。左侧坡石以石绿轻染，石上八哥一双，墨羽黑亮，一只回首鸣叫，一只俯身相顾，寥寥数笔，生机自出。

右下自题“富贵花开满园春”。牡丹寓富贵，满园春色，正是对家道兴旺、岁月和美的祝愿。
