Lotus and Two Ducks

A small round painting on card. On the left the lotus leaves are splashed in heavy ink and indigo, rich in tone; above them two pink lotuses open, outlined, their petal tips washed with rouge and their seed-pods dotted green, and on the right a bud stands upright among leaning water-grass and reeds. At the foot of the circle, on water barely indicated, two waterbirds swim, one with its head raised, one with its head lowered, brushed in pale ink so they seem half there.

The painting has no title, only a seal; this one describes the picture. The lotus sounds like harmony, and two birds swimming together suggest companionship.
