Fragrant Flowers, Birdsong

A square sheet (doufang). A crabapple tree twists up from the lower right, its old trunk in dark and pale ink, mottled with moss. Its branches spread in every direction, crowded with clusters of pink blossom dabbed in without outline, their stamens flicked in with a fine dark brush, among leaves of mixed green and ochre, profuse yet orderly. On a branch a pair of orioles perch side by side, bright yellow with black wings and eye-stripes, one bending its head, the other looking aside with its beak open as if about to sing.

The title at the upper left reads “Fragrant Flowers, Birdsong”: the crabapple in full bloom and the orioles’ song, spring at its height.
