About the painting 赏析

A horizontal sheet, with no inscription or seal. Peonies spread across its whole width: on the left a few pink blooms on open sprays of leaves, with two small butterflies chasing each other above them; on the right a great cluster of pink flowers, each petal shaded separately until the heads look full and soft, and in the upper right corner a single deep red bloom that anchors the composition. At the centre a pair of golden pheasants stands on a pale ochre bank. The finely speckled brown female lifts her head toward the male; he, golden-crested, red-breasted and yellow-rumped, turns to meet her, his long tail sweeping down to the lower left, its barred feathers drawn line by line.

The peony stands for wealth and honour, and the golden pheasant, jinji, shares its first syllable with jin, brocade: a wish for a future as bright as brocade. Laid out from left to right, flowers and birds carry the spring across the sheet.

牡丹寓富贵，锦鸡寓前程似锦，二者相配，为花鸟画中最常见、亦最为人所喜的吉祥题材。横幅展开，花鸟相连，春意自左及右，绵延不绝。
