I walk to where the waters end, and sit to watch the clouds rise. Written by Li Jumei.

About the painting 赏析

A calligraphy fan bearing a famous couplet by the Tang poet Wang Wei, from “My Villa on Mount Zhongnan”: “I walk to where the waters end, and sit to watch the clouds rise.” The ten characters, in cursive script, stand two to a column across the curve of the fan from right to left, with the last character of each line on its own, so each line falls into a two-two-one rhythm. The strokes run on without a break, turning in easy curves, and the closing characters are set down firmly.

The signature “Li Jumei” and a square seal are at lower left, with an oblong seal at the right. The poem describes a walk in the hills: when the stream runs out, the poet simply sits down and watches the clouds come up, content to go wherever the way leads.
