Painted Basin: Lotus Pond

A painted object. The vessel is a white oval basin; the picture is painted on its floor, and the plain rim frames it like a natural oval mount. On it is a corner of a lotus pond: two pink lotuses, one above the other, outlined and washed with rouge, among leaves of blue-green and ink, with a few upright water plants, and at the upper left a kingfisher flying in, beak outstretched.

The basin has no title; this one describes the picture. Chinese brush painting brought to an everyday object, refined and homely at once.
