About the painting 赏析

Bamboo fills the upper left: pale ink stems and leaves in soft blue and green, light and airy. Below it stands a garden rock, rubbed in with pale ochre and ink and dotted with dark moss. On the rock a pair of golden pheasants keep each other company. The male, with golden crest, scarlet breast and long trailing tail, is painted in fine outline and careful colour, feather by feather; the brown, speckled female settles beside him. Peonies in pink and deep red open beneath the rock.

The title is built from the motifs. The peony means wealth and honour, and bamboo recalls the saying that bamboo brings news of peace. The pheasant, whose plumage is as rich as brocade, joined to flowers makes the idiom “adding flowers to brocade”: good fortune upon good fortune.

左上修竹数竿，淡墨写竿，花青草绿写叶，清疏透气；中部湖石一方，淡赭与墨色皴擦，石边苔点浓重。石上锦鸡一对，顾盼相依：雄者金冠朱腹，长尾斜曳，翎羽以工笔勾勒填彩，一丝不苟；雌者褐羽斑驳，伏于其侧。石下牡丹盛放，粉红深红，交相辉映。

牡丹寓富贵，竹取“竹报平安”之意，合而为“富贵平安”；锦鸡羽色斑斓如锦，复缀以繁花，即“锦上添花”，寓好事相承、美上加美。
