About the painting 赏析
A square sheet. The old trunk of a crabapple curves down the right side in dark ink, mottled with moss, and flowering branches reach out across the sheet, crowded with clusters of pink blossom, stamens flicked in ink, among green leaves. A pair of orioles perch on two branches, one above the other: the upper one hangs from its twig, head down as if feeding; the lower one lifts its head with its beak open in song, bright yellow with ink-black wings, the two answering each other.
The title at the upper left reads “Fragrant Flowers, Birdsong”. Close in subject to the other square of the same title but laid out differently, it too is a picture of spring in full bloom.
此为斗方。海棠老干自右侧弯曲而下，浓墨写出，苔点斑驳；花枝自干上横斜伸出，粉红花簇层层相拥，墨笔挑蕊，绿叶相衬。黄鹂一双分立上下两枝：上方一只倒挂枝头，俯首觅食；下方一只昂首张喙，似在啼鸣，羽色明黄，黑翅如墨，上下呼应，生趣盎然。
左上题“花香鸟语”，与同题斗方构图相近而布局不同，同写春光烂漫。
