A gentle breeze, mild and clear.

About the painting 赏析

A calligraphy fan. Across it, from right to left, are four large characters, huifeng hechang, the strokes round and flowing in the spirit of running script, the ink dark and pale by turns, the characters widely spaced along the curve, with a seal at either end.

The phrase is from Wang Xizhi’s Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Poems, “the sky clear, the air fresh, a gentle breeze mild and clear”: the ease of a spring day, and just the thing to write on a fan that brings a breeze.
