Magnolias (fan)

A folding fan. Purple and white magnolias open across the right half: the purple ones in magenta, the white ones outlined in pale ink, all with orange-yellow hearts, among leaves of mixed blue-green and ink, full and spreading. At the left four lines of running script follow the curve of the ribs, writing and painting setting each other off.

The fan carries no separate title; this one describes the picture, and the lines at the left are still to be read. The magnolia, opening in early spring, stands for purity and honour.
